Two  Needle Mittens

This page has a pattern generator (aka program) to create a pattern to help you knit a mittens by hands using two needles.   The machine knit version of the pattern is available here.

You can make your mittens in any yarn; just enter the gauge and head size in the program, and you'll get the pattern you need.

Main siteblog (read the latest), mitten collectionhat collection and  poncho & cape collection.

You must set your browser to run javascript and to accept cookies to run this program.   With some browsers, the address bar should also read "http://www.thedietdiary" at the beginning. If the www's aren't there, stick them in!

Characteristics of the mittens:

  • Knit from bottom up on a two needles.
  • Ribbed cuffs.
  • You may vary size the to fit any hand.
  • You enter the stitch and row gauge for your yarn.

Remember: Like all patterns spit out by my generators, this is mostly shaping directions.  The purpose of the generators is to let you be creative, use any yarn you like, and eliminate the  need to do pesky calculations.  You might want to consider shopping for yummy yarn at one of the advertisers listed to the left.  These would be really nice an warm in a cozy wool or mohair. (Heck, visit my hat collection and make a matching hat!)

Patterns are worth something. Custom patterns should be worth even more.  This is sort of "shareware".   If you knit one of these, please send me a $3 donation.  (Pictures are welcome too!)

Enter Data for Your Mittens

You must modify the following data to match the gauge and shape you want!  Just change the numbers; it recalculates automatically.

Note your machine setting on your directions in pen.  You must use the same machine setting when knitting the swatch and the mittens!

Enter needle diameter for stockinette  swatch and mittens: Child's X-small corresponds to 2-4 year olds. Child's medium is for 7 year olds. Child's X-large is for young teens.  "Adult's medium" fits my medium women's hands; adult large fits men's medium hands.  If you want to be more certain, measure a pair off mittens that fit.

If you are making lined mittens, choose "yes" for that option. That makes the thumb 2 stitches larger to accomodate the inner mitten.  You might also want to design the mittens a size  larger than the wearer normally uses. The inner mitten will be a little smaller than the outer mitten, and you need their hand to fit inside the inner mitten.

Based on your input, my program will make mittens  inches long (not counting the ribbing).

Knitting Instructions

Yarn: About 4-6 ounces if knit in worsted and 6-8 ounces if knit in chunky. The exact amount depends on the mitten size and stitch type you select.

You will need two diameter needles. The larger diameter needles should be used to knit the stockinette swatch. The smaller ones are used to knit the ribbing.

Mitten: Make 2.  They are both identical.

  1. Rib Cuff:
    1. Cast on  stitches loosely but neatly. (So cast on is elastic but looks nice. I cast on with larger diameter needles).
    2. With smaller needles, knit in 1 x 1 ribbing to until work measures inches from cast on.   (Optional: carry along a thread of elastic yarn.  Also, if you like longer ribbing, you may knit more.)
  2.  Begin Mitt:
    1. Change to larger diameter needles and begin working stockinette. On next  row, increase  stitches uniformly across the row. (You now have  stitches.)
    2. Hang a row marker in the center of the row.
    3. Knit rows in stockinette; work will measure  inches from row marker placed after ribbing. (Option: Begin to knit a fair isle pattern. Continue the pattern on the upper mitten. )
  3. Begin Thumb Gusset:
    1. Increase one stitch at the beginning of each of the next  rows.  (I knit 3 stitches, then I pick up a stitch from the bar of the stitch one row below the next one on the left hand needle.  This looks pretty and doesn't leave a hole.)
    2. Remove stitches from both edges on waste yarn, continue knitting on the remaining stitches.
  4. Upper Mitten:
    1. Knit even until work measures inches from row marker placed at the end of the ribbing.
    2. On next row, (k1,  k2 tog) across row.  Knit 1 row.
    3. Fold mitten with right sides together and work a three needle bind off.  Top is seamed.
  5. Knit thumb
    1. Pick up the thumb stitches from waste yarn plus pick up 2 more stitches at hand seam of the upper mitten.
    2. Hang a row marker near the center of the row.
    3. Knit  until thumb measures inches from row marker placed at the beginning of the thumb.
    4. On next row, ( k2 tog) across row.
    5. Break yarn leaving a long tail. Thread a tapestry needle, and take stitches off on yarn.
  6. Finish:
    1. Close side seams and thumb using mattress stitch along inside edge and thumb. Tidy loose ends, steam or block as appropriate for you yarn. Wear. (If you need another mitten, make another one. )
