Robert and David have been hankering for sweaters ever since I bought my knitting machine. They admired some shawl collared sweaters in a hand knitting magazine.  But they wanted the neckline deeper, and they wanted different stitches.  Oh, and could you change the color to complement our eyes?

    Yeah, yeah. Right.

Well, they are my brothers-in-law.  And they do help Jim with all the endless remodeling I request.  If I don't curry favor with them, the bathroom in the new house in Lisle will be '70's chocolate brown forever!

So, I showed R&D some colors samples.  I made swatches.  And I made more swatches.  I tested the swatches for washability.  Finally, I got everything right.  Here are Robert and David in their sweaters.

David's Sweater also appears on page 64 of the Nov./ Dec. 2000 issue of Machine Knitters Source.  You will find detailed knitting directions there. I've provided close ups of the stitches below.  I will be adding the shawl collar to the programs-- probably in May (or June, or July!)  I'm pretty busy right now communting between my old house in Ames, Iowa and the new one in Lisle, Illinois.

    Swatch Details

David's sweater was knit using double strands of Jagger Spun Superlamb in Admiral. This yarn is 100% machine washable lambswool. I've already machine washed the swatch. I've never machine dried this particular swatch.  But, I have machine dried this yarn and that works well.

Oh!  It is scary to wash the superwash.  It growswhen wet.  Then it shrinks back down to size.  So, don't worry if the sweater looks a size bigger when it comes out of the washing machine!  It will look just fine after line or machine drying.

The stitch technique is 140 on the Passap.  This can be done on any machine with a ribber.  Set up the machine for full needle rib.  Then have one bed knit for rows, then tuck for rows.  The other bed just knits.  The tuck rows cause the opposite surface to ripple.

The swatch for David's sweater has been machine washed.  It was laid flat to dry.

Robert's sweater is knit in teal Jagger Spun 2/8 Heather. The yarn is 100% wool, handwash or dry clean. The teal didn't scan true; ask your dealer for a color card.

The swatch is knit in half fisherman's rib on every other needle.  It has has been hand washed and laid flat to dry.

    Knit away, fiends,
