Macadamia Nuts Good For Your Heart

Adding macadamia nuts to your diet has been shown to reduce total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride levels compared with the standard American diet.

In a study conducted by Dr. Amy E. Griel, recent Ph.D. recipient in nutritional sciences form Penn State, a group of participants with slightly elevated cholesterol levels were fed a macadamia nut diet that included macadamia nuts mixed into meals, as a salad topping, as a snack, and in cookies and muffins. Another group was fed a diet similar in calories, carbs, protein and fat levels. Calories were selected to avoid weight loss or gain.

Results: The group that ate macadamia nuts lowered their cholesterol.

Given the recent good news about chocolate, maybe I’ll soon be eating chocolate covered macadamia nuts for my health? (Well, they still have a lot of calories. Sigh…)
