Key to losing weight: Eat smart, not less

“We have now shown that choosing foods that are low in calorie density helps in losing weight, without the restrictive messages of other weight loss diets.”

So says explained Ello-Martin, of Pennsylvania State University (See Medline Plus.)

In a recent study, researchers compared the effects of two diets. In one diet, women were told to reduce fat; in the other, they were told to increase water rich foods like fruits and vegetables while also trying to restrict fat. Participants were not assigned daily limits for calories.

Women in both groups lost weight, but the women who added low energy density fruits and veggies to their diet lost more weight. And the difference isn’t tiny: they lost 19.6 pounds; the other group lost 14.7 pounds.

In case you are wondering: consuming low energy density foods is the principle used in the Volumetrics plan; you’ll find more details in Professor Barbara Rolls books.
