The Food and Drug Administration, now says there is enough evidence to support such a qualified claim that corn oil an foods containing corn oil may reduce the risk of heart disease, and corn oil products can carry that claim as long as consumers were not misled. Products that are low in cholesterol and saturated fat, and meet some other criteria may say,

“very limited and preliminary scientific evidence suggests that eating about 1 tablespoon (16 grams) of corn oil daily may reduce the risk of heart disease due to the unsaturated fat content in corn oil.”

The claim must also indicate that to achieve health benefits, the oil must replace other fats in the diet; people shouldn’t be adding fat to their diet. (Read more at: Corn oil products can claim heart benefit.)

Meanwhile, a new study published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition finds that foods rich in flavanoids reduce heart may protect postmenopausal women from coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease and stroke. What specific foods help?

Reuters Health reports:

Specific foods also were linked to risk reductions in heart, blood vessel disease and mortality as well, including bran, which provided a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke; apples, pears, and red wine, which cut both cardiovascular and coronary heart disease risk; grapefruit, which cut coronary heart disease risk, and strawberries and chocolate, tied to a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

I’ll have to post my recipe for chocolate covered strawberries. From now on, I’ll protect my heart by washing them down with red wine. :)
