Alli: Diet Pill Approved by FDA

“The first over-the-counter diet pill approved by the FDA is expected to hit store shelves next month. The new version of Orlistat is called Alli. It will be half the strength of its prescription counterpart, Xenical. Even though this pill will have the FDA’s blessing, only diet and exercise can provide the desired results.”

From Sylvia Perez’s May 5, 2007 column written for ABC news.

Ms. Perez’s informative article also discusses other common ingredients in diet pills, including hoodia, ephedra, Bitter Orange, and caffeine. She points out that generally, diet pills are not tested by the FDA because they are classified as “nutritional supplements” which do not require government testing or approval. They may be safe, or not. Who knows? They may work, or not. Who knows?

In contrast, drugs do require approval before sale; so drugs are tested by the FDA. So, Alli, will be the first diet pill that really has been tested and approved for over-the-counter sales.

Oh, but guess what? Every article I read says Alli will help you lose weight provided…. you watch your diet and exercise! :)

  1. I would never take Alli. After reading the warning that you should wear dark clothes because you might have an “accident”, that is just a major turnoff for me.
