It occurred to me that some people arrive at my site and use the generators almost immediately. Some are mystified.
One of the reasons some people are mystified is that they do not understand the whole idea of “designing my own”. They think they should search, and search and search for patterns to imitate stitch by stitch. You can do that. It’s fine.
But, if you want to design your own stuff, it’s actuall pretty easy. The pesky part is doing calculation to make sure things fit. The programs at my site help you do that. (Click some of the links.)
Still, you’re nervous. If you don’t “get” the idea of designing you need to do three things.
? First, repeat after me: “Yes, I can design. Yes, I can design”.
? Second, read one of the books I’ve put on the side bar. Both “Knitting Without Tears” and “Sweaters in Plain English” are great books that describe the idea of designing.
? Third, look at my sweater generators and see if those help you make the sweater shape you like.
The generators let you adjust a number of design features, let you compare the style to your body dimensions and then they do the calculations. Depending on your outlook, you may prefer the EZ generators, which give detailed directions, but limit your design choices, or the full generators, which let you make lots of design choices.
Maybe some other people can suggest their favorite design books?

Hi Lucia! I think your idea for this blog is fantastic! I’m am aspiring designer working on my 1st sweater and I love the reassurance you give to new designers. I’m sick of looking for a pattern that might do and I’d much rather spend my time knitting someting I will truly love with no compromises. I look forward to future entries.
