I wrote up the Afghan/Scarf pattern.
Naturally, I couldn’t keep this simple and just tell you how I knit my scarf. I wrote an Afghan/Scarf pattern generator. This way, you can enter your gauge, the width and length you want, and make the item the length and width you actually want.
This may seem like over kill, since, ordinarily, figuring the number of stitches to cast on to knit a scarf or afghan panel is trivial. But this scarf is a little more complicated than usual. The rows or stitches end up on the diagonal; you can’t just multiply by width the stitch gauge to find the number of stitches. I had to figure out an angle Θ and then divide by the width of the scarf by cosine(Θ) to find the width measured along the rows. (I bet you needed to know that!)
Assuming you can find stash yarn exactly like the wonderful yarn I’m using, you can duplicate my pattern exactly. I entered the values of the scarf I’m currently knitting as the default, and that replicates my pattern. Just don’t change anything.
But, since you’ll probably want to use yarn in your stash, or buy some at the store, you can customize the pattern. All you need to do is enter the width you want, and your stitch gauge, and the program will figure out how many stitches you should cast on.
You can design your scarf to be knit in stockinette or garter stitch, to be felted or not, and to be a scarf or an afghan. To create your pattern, visit: Afghan / Scarf pattern generator.
