I wrote the machine knit bucket hat pattern generator, and knit it up!

Most my machine knit (MK) hats are knit sideways; most my hand knit (HK) hats are knit from bottom to top. (This is also the difference between my MK cape and my HK cape.)
I organize the knitting for machine knit hats sideways because I find it easier to shape the crown that way (I hate transferring stitches on the machine.) Knitting sideways also lets me work some interesting color effects which would be a bit difficult when I knit from the bottom up.
To show what you can do when you knit a hat sideways, I decided to make an ugly cute version of the hat. (Sort of like my ugly cute slippers.)
If you examine the little hat, you’ll see the eight “wedges”. The tip of the wedge is in the center of the hat, and happens to have 2 rows. The base of the wedge is near the hem, and has a lot of rows. This whole hat is knit with short rows. It’s really easy on the machine. (The knitting took 20 minutes.)
I was pretty sure I no adult in my family would want a two-tone hat like this, so I knit it to fit Colocha. Anyway, I wanted to test the hat proportions I coded before knitting a real hat using more expensive yarn. (Colocha’s hat is knit out of fairly inexpensive acrylic and it uses about half as much yarn as a hat for an adult.)
Tomorrow, I’ll start Rosemary’s bucket hat. I think I want to felt the hat. I haven’t knit the swatch, so I’ll finish the hat the next day. I’ll post the URL for the proof-read bucket hat pattern generator after I’ve knit Rosemary’s hat. Then any of you (even clever hand knitters who can figure out how to translate MK to HK) can knit a bucket hat too.
Out of curiosity, does anyone want to see a hand knit version?

I’d LOVE a handknit version of the pattern generator! Is there any way to be notified by email when it is ready for use? Most hat patterns are too big on me but a generator would probably work great. Rosie DOES look adorable in her hat. All the ladies at church will be wanting one when they see her.

I get the comments by email too, so I’ll try to email you when I have the hand knit version done. I’ve flagged your email so I don’t mess up and forget. But, the fact is, I always put pictures up, so if you check here, you’ll find it. (I also have a whole hat links page. So, that helps too.)
I suspect I’ll have the HK bucket hat done in less than 2 weeks. The only hold up is that I just swatched for two baby ponchos for my mom’s friend’s daughters twins! But, I need to prevent myself from knitting too soon. (I’ve learned the hard way that machine knit swatches need to “rest”. I *must not* measure the gauge until tomorrow!)
I’m writing up the code for the HK hat! Then, I’ll probably have a hat on the needles while my husband and brothers in law watch the football games this weekend.
