Here is Teddy in his hat. I designed the hat to be felted, so it’s a bit large. I’ll throw it in the laundry today.
I made some modifications to convert the machine knit pattern into a hand knitting pattern. I’m not too confident I made the right choices.
But then, I’m always nervous before felting things. Things designed to be felted look so weird before felting and steaming.
For the record, the major changes in the pattern are:
I replaced the I-cord at the hem with a hung hem turned on a purl bump. I know I haven’t felted this yet, but I’m not feeling really happy with that decision. The hung hem is not as rigid as the I-Cord , and its gauge seems to widen just a bit compared to the gauge of the rest of the hat. I think the I-Cord held the bottom to size better. Still, the hung hem is quicker to knit, and should work fine. I just wish I’d reduced the number of stitches in the hem 5-10% . (Why didn’t I do that? I always do that with machine knit hung hems. It’s the rule of thumb!
. I’ll make that change to the code regardless.)
I knit from the bottom up; the machine knit version is knit sideways. Knitting from the bottom up works out fine.
I guess we’ll see what this hat looks like after I felt, shrink and steam it.
