I learned something!

donation yarnOne of my motivations in starting “The Knitting Fiend Forum” was to quickly learn what’s going on “out there”, instead of just focusing on showing people what I’m doing. And, I learned a very useful thing — for me. Melissa is also going to have a drawing. If you send yarn to Interim House by the end of March, she’ll enter you in her drawing.1

There are several prizes; one is a signed copy of “Cheaper than Therapy”; I’m pretty sure my friend Gail wrote a story for that book. So, I want to win that; I’ll force Gail to sign it! :)

To implement my plan to win this book and get Gail to sign it, I went down to my stash and collected “stuff”. Quite a bit of stuff. I’ve been knitting a long time; my mom has knit a long time and one of my mom’s friend Jill has been knitting along time. We all always buy an extra skein or two; Consequently, I have tons of left over yarn from projects.

You are wondering how my mom’s friend is implicated in tragedy of my ever expanding stash?

Well, her friend Jill has donated loads of lovely yarn from a stash she accumulated over the course of who knows how many years. When I say loads, I mean loads. I’ve knit up a lot of it, but I falling behind.

So, I decided I’d look through my bags of yarn and donate whole skeins in good condition that I will never, ever use. There it is pictured to the left. It’s going in a box, getting sealed and then visiting the post office. It will be gone!

Don’t worry, I’ll still have tons of stash left over. Tons! None of the mohair, hand spun or hand painted yarns Jill gave me are in there. Neither are the lace weight wools. I’m also keeping many of yarns left over from my projects. I still of stuff I’m “sure” I will use “someday”.

100_3394.jpgYes bags. After all, it’s always hard to part with yarn. To be realistic, I won’t use most the yarn I’m “sure” I will use.

How do I know I’ll never use this yarn? Well, I found the pattern to the right mixed in with the stash! When I saw that, I even remembered I bought the green yarn at a garage sale over 10 years ago. It was being sold a knitter’s children; the needed to clear out her place because she was moving!

The yarn is surprisingly lovely and in good condition. It will knit up into great socks. Still, I don’t like to knit the same thing twice. I have to admit I’m never going to 10 pairs of green socks. So, I added those all skeins to the bag.

Now, I better wrap it up and get to the post office, because as I write this, I’m beginning to think I should keep 2 green skeins for 1 pair of socks!
