Cape Finished!

capeI finished my cape!

I know the photo looks like a big red blob… But, it looks really nice on me. I just can’t take a decent picture by myself.

I do have a funny story. Mom came over while I was knitting this. She kept petting the mohair and talking about how practical capes were. She explained shawls are a nuisance since you have to hold on to them; in contrast capes stay on because they close at the neck. She raved about the color, and continued to pet the mohair.

Then, Mom sat up straight; she suddenly remembered something important!

She’d dropped off two huge bags of yarn at my house a week ago. Mom’s friend Jill was de-stashing, so she gave mom yarn to give to me. Mom wasn’t absolutely sure what was in those bags, but petting the mohair, Mom suggested, “Let’s look for mohair.”

We hurried to the bags, opened them, and voila! Two balls of white mohair! Two balls of mauve mohair!

Mom made off with the mohair, telling me she’s going to make “neck thingies” out of them.

Afterwards, she’ll pose for a photo picture and I’ll write a generator. I suspect in a month or so, I will reveal a generator for “Mom’s neck thingy”. For now, I all I have is a sketch on a napkin and the word “neck thingy”. So, the rest is left up to our imagination.

Later on, my mother-in-law, Rosemary stopped by. She kept petting the mohair too! She sat next to me as I knit and fondled the little ball of yarn, rubbing it against her cheek. She doesn’t knit, so she didn’t make off with any mohair. But, I’m developing the impression that everyone loves mohair. If Mom’s “neck thingies” are quick and easy, I may end up making “neck thingies” for my sisters. (Or maybe Mom will? )

As for my cape, pictured here, I hand knit this from the neck down using a little less than 140 grams of mohair. The cape closes at the neck using an I-Cord tie which I ran through holes formed by eyelets at the base of the slightly ruffled stand up collar.

Tonight, I’ll dress up and have Jim take my picture; the generator to help you chart the pattern to fit you will be available tomorrow.
