Olympic Gold!
Posted on 03.06.06 by lucia @ 3:18 am

Because I was vacationing in Puerto Rico, I was unable to collect and post my Olympic medal the moment it became available. But, I couldn’t. What a lucky break for me!

Clueless, naive knitter that I am, I would have seen the medal Franklin created, oohed and ahhed, excitedly downloaded and posted it totally unmodified.

The consequences might have been dire!

“Dire,” you ask? Yes, dire!

I know. You still see little risk. Even I only discovered the risk when Franklin published some feedback sent to him by two thoughtful readers. One pointed out that children will see this medal.

Children? I hadn’t thought of that. Look at the medal! It might be fine for adults, but it would obviously harm children!

Yes, harm! And yes, it’s so obvious! The athlete is competing in a winter sport, but he’s dressed for summer. Can you say “cognitive dissonance?” Repeat after me: cognitive dissonance!

Impressionable children will be driven out of their already small minds!

ClothedOlympianClearly, the athlete should be dressed appropriately for the Winter Olympics.

To fix this, I adopting my most “mom like” voice and sternly told my Olympic Athlete to put on some winter clothes.

As you can see, he complied.

  2. I was waiting for you medal to go up to say congratulations! And may I say that that is one very spiffy medal, now that he is ‘properly’ dressed!

  4. I followed all the fuss at Franklin’s blog…and your response is hysterical!

And for the record, when the children at my house saw the gold medal our two year old said “He’s Naked!”. The five year old then replied…”No, he’s half naked. And chilly.”

So I am glad you helped the poor guy out. Now if I can only prevent further damage to my children…

  5. Hey, there is snow on the ground here in the Chicago suburbs and I try to economize by keeping the heat low. I can’t have a naked man knitting in my living room or back yard, now can I?

One thing the fuss makes me wonder: Did anyone knit their projects primarily to win the right to post the button at their blog? Well, if they did, they now have a decently clothed one!

  6. What? No Mittens?

  7. Um, Lucia dear, did you put a sock on that poor man’s HAND?

Geez, at least give him a decent mitten.

And, um, other parts are appropriately clothed, right?

  8. I suggested he wear mittens, but he insisted they would interfere with tossing. He mumbled something like “You don’t see quarterbacks wearing mittens!”
I think he’s actually wearing a speed skating costume. It’s just so tight you can’t tell. Still, if children can’t tell, they could be scarred!
