Finicky Cats Prefer . . .
Posted on 02.28.06 by lucia @ 6:52 am

Jim and I had a difference of opinion. I said The General, a modern easy care cat, would prefer acrylic. Jim disagreed. He said, “The General is a high ranking cat; he will surely prefer a luxury fiber like mohair.”

Mohair or Acrylic? To resolve this important issue, we decided to ask The General himself. We plopped him on the table, allowed him to inspect a brown skein of acrylic and a peach skein of mohair and asked him which he preferred.

Since The General doesn’t speak English well, we anticipated it might be difficult to determine his preference. So, we watched The General’s every move, carefully interpreting them for clues.

He picked up the mohair, moved it toward the edge of the table and sat next to it. What could that mean?

Sidles up to MohairJim shouted, “See! He prefers mohair!”

I said, “No way! That’s just a random move!”

Jim raised his right eyebrow and gave me a look.

I pick MohairWe watched a few more minutes. The General embraced the mohair between his paws. Jim laughed and pointed.

I groaned, moved toward the table, and whispered, “Come on General baby. Show us you prefer acrylic!”

The General then made his preference clear:
The General really picks mohair
That darn cat. He always sides with Jim!

  1. He’s so cute! He looks like Garfield!

And he probably prefers the mohair as he doesn’t do the laundry (or DOES he?) :-)

  2. Maybe it wasn’t the fiber content. Maybe it was the color. Remember, this is a cat. Cats will respond to the question that you should have asked, not the one that you thought you asked.

  3. The General has never done a single load of laundry. The only tasks he ‘helps’ with are knitting and taste testing dinner.

He may like the color. Hhhmmmm. We’ll see!

  5. Hey, plunk something from an actual animal in front of a cat, and that’s what they’ll pick, even out of curiosity alone. Unfair competition, methinks.

  6. Could you get away with skewing the test results by swapping in some Lion Brand Wool-Ease? My cats LOVE that stuff, more than any 100% acrylic or 100% wool yarn. Not sure why…

  7. Hmnmm Woolease? I’ll need to buy some of that to do another test!

  8. OK. That’s it. I’m going home and pulling out my 10 different colors of acrylic and doing a cat test. I’ll do a poodle test while I’m at it….

  9. Your General has good taste, evidently.

Maybe if you had mohair and acrylic in the identical colours the choice would have been the same!!!

I really like your pink sweater and the swing coat.
(Careful though, swing has a different meaning, in England.)

    Happy knitting,
    Olwen
