Shoulder Ring Completed

Shoulder Ring for Olympic RingWatching figure skating sure does slow down knitting!

I cast on 11 stitches yesterday and over the two days I managed to knit a 45″ long strip. Why so slow? I actually had to pay attention while turning cables knitting the bobbles! But, the strip is small, so I finished it.

I folded the strip to form a ring. Because I’d cast on provisionally, I was able to grafted the ring shut. (This was a pain in the neck. I took photos, but given the time demands of The Knitting Olympics, I’m not going to show you how I did this.)

That’s all I managed to do since 2 pm yesterday! Sheesh!

Luckily, the rest of this sweater will be stockinet. This is a really unusual sweater design, so I’m going to make everyone guess what I’m doing next. :)

As to the Olympics themselves, Jim and I loved the 9 year old girl singing the Italian anthem, and the lavish dancing displays. His brothers, loved the Ferrari! (What do you expect? They jointly own a Ferrari.)

Of course, the Olympics aren’t about the opening ceremonies, they are about the events. I guess I should give my opinion on those– but bear in mind, I am a total philistine when it comes to sports. Who’s good? Who’s bad? Beats me. Plus, since I’m knitting, I didn’t pay attention to anyone’s names.

We rooted as the Texan in-line skater turned speed skater won his speed skating event; talk about a guy who is all heart!

We “oohhed and ahhed” during pairs skating. Naturally, we decided the American pairs skaters were robbed on points. (Ok, they weren’t robbed; I’m biased. Anyway, even they’d gotten more points they still wouldn’t be in first. Anyway, we enjoyed every skating pairs team we saw.)

It was all very distracting.

I ask myself, “Why did I decide to knit on a tight schedule during the Olympics? ” Oh well, there is still a good chance to finish! IfI pick up the knitting before the Olympics begin airing tomorrow. The first step I need to do involves counting and you know I can’t count and watch tv at the same time!

  1. [...] Note: The cable is knit as a long thin strip, then folded and sewn or grafted together. You can see the sewn ring here: Shoulder Ring. If you plan to graft your strip shut, waste yarn cast on leaving a tail to sew, then end 1 row short of a full repeat and break yarn. If you plan to seam, cast on using any method, end on a full repeat, then bind off. Note also that if you plan to graft, you may want to examine your cable motif to decide the best row to begin knitting to avoid grafting near a cable twist. I began knitting on row 5 of “Bobble Cable”, because that falls between twists. [...]
