Lovely cabled yoke,
    waist flattering twisted rib.
             A splendid sweater!

I don’t subscribe to knitting magazines because I chart all my own patterns. Wednesday, I ran across the Winter 2005/06 VK on the newsstand, opened it, and just loved all the beautiful sweaters I could knit to wear during our chilly Chicago winters! I couldn’t resist buying a copy.

  1. I like that sweater too! It’s beautiful. I wonder if I can change it to where it doesn’t have a zipper on the neck, which doesn’t seem like it would be comfortable.

I can’t believe it isn’t knit in the round! That sweater practically demands it.

  2. I’m also mystified why it’s not knit in the round. I’ve been looking the pattern over. It would be easy to change to knitting in the round. I haven’t checked the clearance for the head opening. If it’s large enough, I don’t know why you couldn’t just knit in the round, make a closed neck.

I do think the pattern itself may need a bit of tweaking too. I’ve been looking at the placement of the decreases on the yoke; I squinted and notice a small “bulge” in front of the neck. (You need the magazine to see that.) I suspect the yoke shaping could be improved by shifting some of the decreases around a bit.

But the general design is beautiful and I strongly suspect I will make that sweater, or something very like it, next summer to wear next winter.

  3. That was in VK? Figures. I finally let my subscription lapse.

I envy you your charting/designing abilities.

  4. just when I decide VK isn’t worth my attention they put out a pattern like this. It’s BEAUTIFUL! I betcha you could figure out how to knit it in the round…I’m trying to work it for Rhapsody in the round, with little success. Stupid seams…

  5. I think this issue is splendid. Admittedly, my standard for “good” in a magazine is “more than 4 things I would wear.” I do count the more ordinary sweaters in my tally. Sweaters I would admire on others with different figure types are a bonus.

I think the only items I wouldn’t wear, and probably wouldn’t admire on others is 23! (And that’s just because I don’t care for is 23. The only reason I don’t like that swaeter is I don’t like large patches of color mixed with the cables. The vest would look great in another yarn!

  6. That is a beautiful pattern. I love looking at the issue before buying. I have so many and it’s hard to throw them away!
