Knitting has been slow at the Fiend household.1 Yet, this heel-less ghost sock materialized! It chanted: Knit, Lucia, Knit your cares away!
Yes, I knit the tube down to the toe unwound enough yarn to graft (plus a little more “just in case”) and then broke the yarn. (I’ll graft later. That way, if I mis-programmed “sock-u-later 7 in waiting”, and the sock is the wrong length, I’ll be able to rip back without unpicking the grafting. )
I now picked up the heel stitches I’d put on waste yarn earlier this week. Strangely enough, to create a heel, I’m knitting a second “toe”! That is to say every other round, I decrease a total of 4 stitches– one at the right and left edges on the “top” and one on the right and left edges of the “bottom”. When I’m down to the correct number of stitches to make the heel snug I’ll bind off.
Looking at this, I am reminded tons of people on the knitlist were asking how to make Yoga Socks. Well, I think anyone who looks at this sock and knows how to knit can guess. Instead of working the “toe” to create a “heel”, just work a few rounds of ribbing and bind off.
1. For those wondering, Biggie is eating drinking has has resumed grooming himself. He is still on tetracycline (which he thinks tastes bad.) The vet prescribed steroids to improve his appetite and vitamins with liver and iron to help him start making more red blood cells. He thinks both the steroids and the vitamins taste bad! But, he’s eating!
