I want to chart out the Aran pattern shown to the left. If I suceed, can post the full pattern for Jim’s sweater. When I knit the sweater, I just charted by hand on graph paper, and only charted half the motif. I’d really like to chart it nicely so I don’t need to give instructions like “mirror for left half”.
So, I’m searching for good charting aids!
I’ve surfed a bit to find knitting fonts, and found two free fonts on line. I installed David Xenakis’s of Knitters Knitter’s Symbols Font. It seems almost perfect for Aran work, but I can’t seem to find a font I like that includes a symbol for knit stitches traveling over a purl ground! I tried to install the knitting fonts from Aire River, even though they were blank when previewed in the Font Book. After installing, Word and Excel wouldn’t open, so I deleted the fonts and rebooted my Mac, which restored functionality to Word and Excel. (The blank font issue could be the result of something I did or it could be the font. In any case, I failed.
)
So, having not found what I need, it’s time to ask knitters “out there” questions! Do you know where to find good knitting fonts that show knit stitches traveling over purls, that also work on the Mac? Or, do you know how to install the Aire River knitting font on the mac? Or . . . just know something that might help me?

Try this one, I don’t know if it has what you need or not.

If you are using OSX it’s easy. download the Aire River font zip file.You will have a folder on your desktop called knitsymbols. Open it and put the font file in Home…library…font book. Should now be listed under your menu…fonts on any program that has fonts listed. I use it with Appleworks. It works with Illustrator and Corel, etc, but appleworks is easier I think. I have the Knitters fonts and I love them, use them all the time, but like you I needed a symbol for traveling stitches over purls and Knitters doesn’t have one.

I’m trying to do a search to find knitting fonts to add to Excel or Word, and low and behold, there’s already something about it on your site. I should’ve known! I was able to get the font to work for Windows and they do have a Mac version, so maybe give it another try. Thanks for great info on your site! See you next Thursday.
