I’ve begun knitting my earflap hat. (I’m using a stealth generator– it’s written, but not proof knit. I’ll make it public when I’m done with the hat!)
So far, I have ear flaps!
The flaps are knit using short rows. I love short rows because the instructions always seem so mysterious. As you knit, the shape forms. Suddenly, “voila” earflap.
The picture above and to the left shows the earflap when it is halfway complete. I’d knit short rows, knitting 1 stitch less each row until I came to nearly a point. The knitting forms a triangle.
The picture to the right shows the earflap after I worked the second half, which involved increasing short rows. I knit 1 more stitch each row. The knitting folded over itself making a nice ear flap. (It’s sort of weird watching it bulge up and fold as you knit.)
Of course, I made two flaps.
I’m now looking through fair-isle books to pick a little fair-isle pattern for the brim. (You didn’t think I planned everything in advance, did you?)
