Based on email comments, questions I read at sockknitters, and my own curiosity, I’m going to do a “heel turn experiment”. I could do this by knitting sock after sock after sock. But, that takes too long!
So, instead, I’m going to cast on a certain number of stitches, knit an inch, do a heel turn, and then knit an inch for a variety of sock heel turns. I’ll take pictures and post the various heels side by side. This will provide a variety of examples we can all examine and compare.
So, I’m slating this on my to do list:
- Double Wrapped Short rows.
- Making 1 on either side of the short rows to eliminate side holes.
- After thought heel turn.
- Heel turns suggested by readers. (Yep. Here’s your chance!)
Of course, I’m not going to repeat with heel turns I already worked. That would be silly. I can just show the heel turns on the actual socks. I already have examples of Single Wrapped Short using the wrap and turn. I also, I took a photo of how they looked if I used yarn over wraps (which looked less nice than the Single Wrap and Turn.)
So…. I’m getting ready to finish the current socks. Readers suggest heel turns, and persnecky techniques and well compare!
Oh, and please: leave the suggestions in comments. Something is weird with my home “knitting” email address. I can’t even send myself email from my “knitting” email address.
I suspect the non-appearing knitting email is due to something short term happening at my web host. Technicians were doing something sufficiently big to make the entire blog and site vanishe for 8 hours on Saturday! I’m sure the knitting email will sort itself out when the technicians but meanwhile, leave any suggestions in comments.

Fun! I once did this and I have a cute caterpillar thingy to show for it. I honestly didn’t learn too too much. The Sherman Heel is nice (google it) and the yo shortrows are okay if you make the yos really tight. Japanese shortrows are okay if you make them not so tight. All of the shortrow methods could use tweeking imo. I recently found a new one that I want to swatch:
