Bad Heels
Posted on 12.03.05 by lucia @ 9:09 am

I’m going to unravel these heels.

The length of the sock is fine. The fit of the heel is fine. They are bed socks, so I don’t need them to be perfect. So, why am I going to rip back?

I’m ripping because I want my toe-up sock-u-lator pattern to suggest the best way to work the short row heels. I tried a new-to-me way and it’s not good.

Now, I’ll admit, I feel kind of stupid, because I’ve knit these type of heels before. To make terrific ones, I used the “wrap and turn” method to turn the short rows. Later, I knit up the wraps. No holes! But, recently, I taught myself the “yarn over” method for turning. Because that method does look better for certain short row applications, I thought it would for these short row heels.

Wrong!

Anyway, guessing this would look better, I described this type of short row in the “Sock-u-lator II”. Luckily, I wrote “in testing” on the page, so readers are warned. I’ll edit the heel directions to work them the good way, then edit the sock-u-lator, and show the good heels! I’ll also need to explain what I’ve discovered about when you should choose wrap and turn and when you should do yarn over knits.

But, not today! Jim is back from a week long trip to Boulder. So, the knitting – taking photos – editing pictures – describing will need to wait until Monday. (Individual activities will continue– it’s just the whole 4 part process that just ain’t gonna happen!)

So, hopefully, Monday, I’ll have a bed sock and a decription of how to knit proper short row heels.

  1. Once I tried yo method with short rows and never again!
I like my way of short rows – when I have to ktog wrap and wrapped stitch I do next – I knit wrapped stitch and then pass wrap over that stitch!
P.S. I am very vergin in knitting socks (2 so far) and I am using toe-up method. Only problem I have is that final touch – bind-off (tight although I bind-off very looselly). Can you help?
