Ear Flap Hat

The ear flaps on this hat are in just the right place for a human. But not for Teddy. Besides that, the hat is knit in baby pink. So, he refused to model.

This hat is very easy to make and taught me a new trick to finish off the top of a simple hat. Use the lace carriage to transfer the stitches to ever other needle; knit the last few rows. then gather the stitches up on a string and pull. Of course, I’d never used my lace carriage at all, so I dropped a bunch of stitches…… Arghhh! (Gotta practice that lace carriage trick though. Anyone have advice? More weight? Less weight? Higher tension? Lower tension?)

Since I’m writing generators quickly, and test knitting, I used stash yarn. The cone says “Mary Lue’s 319 acrylic”. It knits wonderfully. But, to my taste, its a bit too fine for an adult hat in this style. That yarn would be terrific for a baby hat.

The generator is just fine — and up and running. You can create your own pattern here: Ear Flap Hat.

Jim suggests I knit another hat in with fair-isle patterns on the body of the hat. When I wear it, I’ll pretend I’m hiking in the Andes instead of the flat plains of Illinois. Or maybe one of you visitors can knit the hat and send me your picture? :)
