The Second Carnival of Knitting.

Lori a 42 year old college student laments that, due to tight finances, she cannot acquire the type of stashes others have.

Maybe Lori will change her mind if she reads the advice of seasoned stashers.

First, look at Yuvee’s stash which is overflowing the bin her parents assigned her. Can’t you almost see the teen glancing around furtively as she says:

Gee…I hope that somehow my parents won’t notice this…

(I must say, Diana the Dysfunctional Knitter probably said the same thing about her “stash” in high school — and with better reason. )

Of course, eventually you grow up and don’t need to worry about your parent’s wrath. Let’s see how an adult knitter feels about her stash. Dawn undertook a stash inventory:

To know how many miles of yarn I have and to have photographic evidence.

Hhmmm… “miles”, “photographic evidence”. Sounds vaguely criminal to me.

Or maybe, Lori can read Sonja’s description of the tempting, yet unfulfulling nature of her stash who

.. lets me take her out and fondle her occasionally, but gives nothing more in return.

I know those who are without stash may not believe Sonja’s words. Surely they will be convinced if they look at the photographic evidence of my stash. Yes. I have lots of yarn. Some is even nice desirable yarn. But, as Sonja notes, rarely the right yarn for the project you want to knit now. After years of knitting, I know stashing is a sickness

Katie, a fiberholic, stated it more plainly:

What’s in my stash? A lot of junk, honestly.

That’s just the right word. Why didn’t I think of it?

No, Lori, I think if you review all these blogs, you will realize you should heed Erika’s advice:

I am not allowed to buy yarn unless it’s for a specific project.

I’m planning to follow Erika’s advice.

Oh, but look! Someone just emailed me. . . . Noro on sale! 50% off! I can’t pass that up! I’ll find something to do with that. . .

  1. I just recently vetted my stash of the “junk” (one woman’s red heart is another woman’s pleasure) and now I know I have to knit a hell of a lot faster. I’m also trying not to spin up fiber for personal use unless I know exactly what I’ll do with it, for the same reason really. So, it occupies a whole room. Yikes.

  2. If I took up spinning, I’d be lost!

As it is, I need to be much more careful to only buy when I’ve really decided what to knit. I should donate some of those cones to people who are currently in a machine knitting phase. Many of them are really nice yarns. It’s just that my “binge” is hand knitting right now.
