How To Use a Pull Skein
Posted on 09.26.05 by lucia @ 1:14 pm

Today, I will demonstrate how to use a pull skein in 4 easy steps.

  1. Get a fresh pull skein from your stash, photo above left.
  2. Insert your fingers in to the center, dig around and try to find the free end. In the photo above right I have inserted my fingers into the ball; I usually insert both hands, but I can’t take a photo that way.
  3. If you can’t find the free end, which happens constantly, just grab at something and pull out a hunk of yarn barf. See photo below right.
  4. You now have two choices. You can slowly and gently undo the yarn barf and rewind. Or, you can just rewind leaving hunks of yarn barf intact. If I do not plan to knit in public, I prefer the second method. Lovely! See below right.

  1. Um, excuse me? I totally patented that technique. I’m so going to sue you now.

  2. Dear Gail, aka “That Gail” aka “Knitter Gail”,

I have consulted legal counsel and decided that, in response to this threat, I will incorporate. Please read the seemingly endless series of posts to KBTHOF to learn how incorporation will protect me, my content and the IP associated with this novel technique of using a pull skein — which I invented.

For your convenience, the posts begin here.

  3. That’s a great comparison swatch.

It looks like their improved twists the *hidden* stitch!
There seem to be infinite variations.

  5. Skein-disembowlment always pisses me off. If the lump I pull out isn’t 1/2 the skein, I try to knit the guts up quickly so I don’t have to wind them.

The other evil trait of skeins is when the innards have been knit and structural integrity is lost. Ah hates that.

  6. I’m on the final few yards of the skein now. Naturally, it’s tangling.

Pull skeins seem like such a great idea. . .
