Would Your Guy Wear This?
Posted on 08.10.05 by lucia @ 4:48 pm

Look what I found in Barbara Walker’s Third Treasury Of Knitting Stitches! I just love this! I want to knit it.

But now I have a problem. I want to design something for a man so I can submit it to MenKnit.

I can ask my husband if he’d wear it. He might even say yes. But would he? Maybe on his more light hearted days. After all, the Spider is really awesome, and he’s somewhat adventurous. He’s been known to wear a Mickey Mouse Tie, when he want’s to make people laugh.

Still, it’s not exactly something a 48 year old engineer would wear to work. Plus, what if you spilled stuff on it?

So, then I thought, “My Brother”? He’s in California. He doesn’t need a heavy weight Aran sweater with a spider on it.

“Father-in-law”? Nah. He’s way to conservative to wear this.

“Any of my Brothers-in-laws”? Nah x 4!

I have two nephews. The grown up one is a chef. He’s not going to wear it. (I don’t think so, anyway.) How about the younger one? Hhmmm… I may need to ask.

Or maybe the spider belongs on an afghan?

  1. I love that motif. Someone online used it in a mod of the Rogue sweater, calling their version the Angband sweater. You can see it here: http://www.livejournal.com/community/advanced_knit/192178.html on the person’s blog. It’s pretty awesome.
Good luck with your design! I love your blog.

  2. Wow! That’s totally cool! I think I need something like that for me.

I showed it to Jim, and he thinks it totall cool too. But, not for him or his Dad!!! (I’m just going to HAVE to find out what my nephew likes!)

  3. nice! I’d wear it…I don’t know about in “ecru”, maybe more of a light charcoal, but I’d definitely wear it :-)

  4. Hmmm… maybe my nephew, the chef, would wear one? He’s 24 years old (I think). I’m going to have to email him.

Meanwhile, Jim flipped through my books and is admiring the various Aran looking sweaters. I better finish the buttonholes on his cardigan!

  5. What about knitting it on the sleeve?

  6. Lucia,

Once upon a time, square knitted pillows were used to decorate sofas. The covers needed to be washable and easily removed. The spider would be a winner.

You could always say that you knit one of these for a man’s library.

  7. Forget about men! I’m knitting it for myself! Maybe a ski-type head bandeau? A lap afghan? A swatch to pin up on my work bulletin board? A pullover vest? A dog sweater? A dressy evening wrap in black and silver? Mittens for an entomologist?

Men aren’t adventurous enough–but a woman will wear it everyday!
