Jim and I went to the Noble Fool Theater last night and saw a performance of “The Mikado”. It was terrific!
This is only the second time Jim and I have attended a production at “The Noble Fool”, and we’d been leery. After all, the casts at the Noble Fool include a few members of Actors Equity but always include a number of amateurs. We couldn’t help wondering whether the chorus will have sufficient depth to do Gilbert and Sullivan?
We’d also heard the Noble Fool production had updated the production to be “modern” in some way. Would that be good, or wretched?
Well, it was great! Bonnie Shadrake, the musical director created an clever arrangement that sometimes rocked and crooned, but sometimes stuck to the original 1880’s score. The costumes are all modern day Japanese outfits. The leads were all wonderful, and the chorus was excellent. (And as any Gilbert and Sullivan fan who has attended zillions of amateur or semi-semi-professional performances knows, the chorus is very important to a performance. )
If you live anywhere near St. Charles, Illinois, and love musicals, you should go!
