Increase evenly across row: YouTube Video
Posted on 02.19.09 by lucia @ 11:38 am

A reader emailed me and wanted to know how to figure out how to increase evenly across a row. She knew she could use one of my calculators, but also wanted an explanation. So, for beginning knitters, I made a youtube video, explaining with …. toothpicks. Here it is:

The calculator

This calculator will calculate in case you don’t want to use toothpicks.

  1. Thank you so much!! That was fabulous. This gives me another reason to play with beads (instead of toothpicks) when I am knitting! LOL! I feel so special no one has ever made a movie for me. : 0 You have a wonderful gift and a wonderful blog!

  3. So helpful. A lot of knitting is visual and mathematical and the toothpicks were a good way to illustrate the technique. The calculator is great, too. I love Lucia’s instructions and calculators. Thank you for sharing with us. Linda

  6. An oops that is my fault as well–I didn’t count. But I wanted to add 48 sts to 145 sts, evenly spaced; the unbalanced directions said to “K2, (M1, K1) 48 times, end K1.” Yes, that adds up to 48 sts added, but the “end K1″ is badly inaccurate! The balanced method does seem to be correct and that’s what I’ll use after tinking.

  9. Thanks so much. I’m a bit of a math lover, and wasn’t satisfied with any of the calculations I did to evenly increase. It was hit and miss. This is really handy when changing gauges require different increases than the pattern calls for. You’re a genius, and generous.

  11. I love the video. I’m an elementary school teacher and we spend a lot of time helping children visualize and find ways to represent Math. I thought for sure you’d have an accent, but you taks jes like mee.

  13. How fantastic! You’re a natural teacher – I find it very difficult to visualise, and you have managed to make it so easy to understand. Big hug!
