The stereotype
says all knitters are blue haired.
Is it really true?
This Nomota ad ran during the ’50s.
The native American motif is odd enough. Did the advertizers really think wigs made of blue yarn would sell their product? And are the knitters symbolically knitting up their hair?

Yeah, that’s weird. Very weird.

When I knit in public I do have to deal with comments like “I thought only Grandmother’s knit…” (When I’m 23 and clearly not a grandmother). Knitting gods, save us from stereotypes!

I used to get those comments. Now that I’m 50 and old enough to be a grandmother, the stopped!

Wow! I am part Cherokee, and while this one doesn’t bother me, it is almost as bad as the Indian crying over the trash ads in the 70’s.
As for being a blue hair….even when I am old enough to be the blue hair I hope I don’t look like I’ve let myself go….
As for public comments….I just ask the offender if they ever purchased a sweater at a store or a pair of socks and when they say yes, I simply state, “How do you knwo that I didn’t design that?” and they are usually too embarrased to say anything else….

On the “pc” aspect, I have to admit, I was a bit concerned about showing this image. On the other hand, showing it does remind us what advertisers used to do. It’s such a ridiculous image!
I love your answer to people who make the “grannies knit” comments.

How fun, knitting your own hair. I love the blue hair that is just a neat picture.

I don’t ‘get’ the Indian’s knitting. As for blue hair, why not? Babs from Chicken Run has blue hair and I look strangely like her, knitting in hand… bkerk!
