As some of you know, I recently mentioned that according to “Compete” a supposedly objective traffic measuring tool, I am as popular as The Yarn Harlot and strangely, supposedly slightly more popular than Wendy. Now… as it happens, I don’t believe this. In fact, the idea is rolling on the floor laughable.
I know these two knitters are wildly popular. Plus, I had, in the past, seen direct evidence of the popularity of The Yarn Harlot. She once mentioned my button hole calculator at her blog, and let’s just say… well…you can read my reaction here.
Anyway, Wendy saw my trackback, visited and commented on my post. We chitchatted back and forth. I mentioned my sockulators and my links (which are a major source of traffic for me.) Anyway, since Wendy was blogging about knitting socks today, Wendy, The Mega-Powerful Knitting Blogger (with a very cute cat named after me Lucy) wrote this somewhere in the middle of her blog post:

Speaking of Socks
Do y’all know about all the great sock resources over at Lucia’s blog, The Knitting Fiend? There are patterns, tips, tricks, and calculators. Lots of great sock resources!
She posted at 5:44pm Eastern Time. It’s now 5:09 Eastern time. So, wanna’ know how many hits I got so far?

Now, you’ve got to figure, that at most 10% of Wendy’s visitors click that link. And they can’t all visit within 15 minutes of her posting. So… if roughly 40 visited me in 15 minutes… that means… How many knitters visit that Wendy’s site?!
Update (Friday Morning):
This is the effect after two days. One link from Wendy increased my traffic by roughly 500 unique visits on both Wed. and Thursday. (Wendy looked at her daily hits, and she appears to get 30 to 40 times the traffic I get.) Let me assure you, no matter what Compete, the “objective” third party traffic tracking system says, I do not get as many visitors as Wendy Knits or The Yarn Harlot!
But you knew that, right?

So, am I first? And I don’t even knit socks–just come for the haiku. Thanks for the chuckles.

Yep. You’re first!
I switch my focus from time to time. But, yes, much of my base traffic is for the sock stuff I wrote over a year ago. It will draw traffic forever which is good. I want knitter who knit socks to find those links.
But right now, it’s haiku!
I alerted Wendy to the number of hits. I think even she is impressed! (She linked to a socks page, so I doubt we’ll see comments here.)

Now Lucia, I just started this reading blogs and blogging about knitting myself but I have already figured out that the reason people come here is because you are sooo cool.
Yes, I just checked you out today because of what Wendy said about you but I just thank her for pointing me in the right direction.
I just started knitting socks so I appreciate the work you put into writing on that subject.
I am adding you to my blog links right now and to my google reader.
have a great evening

lucia, you are definitely out there- everyone just loves you and no one comments. Shame one them
Comment by becky (3 comments.) — 5/2/2007 @ 6:33 pm
Not all of those readers will be knitters, because not every post on her blog is about knitting. Most probably are, but not all. That’s the beauty of a blog, you can pull visitors for every topic you blog about.

I think I found you from a Google alert! Only it was this morning so I have already forgotten. A few hours and whew, it’s all gone.

This blog traffic thing you’ve got going here is cracking me up!!
Comment by Tracy (4 comments.) — 5/2/2007 @ 7:26 pm
That’s just crazy!!!! Awesome traffic.

Well I visit you almost every day and I try to comment to most posts. If I can think of something witty to say. lol
I actually got a comment on my blog thanks to my pitiful comment on your last post. hehehe
Frankly, I think most people go to Wendy’s blog because they are just totally amazed at how fast the woman seems to knit. Makes one really concider knitting monogamy. (So says the woman knitting 2 shawls at once, not to mention the 2 scarves, and 3 sweaters. lmao)

Just checking on the do follow bloggers. I know i checked your site when I added it to the list but you currently have the nofollow tags in your comments. What happened? Can you please get back to me on this? Tricia

I haven’t looked into “Compete” but other cross-site traffic analyzers are pretty bogus. They rely on net sufers being “registered” in the tracking site’s system or hooking a plugin up to their browser. They can’t actually track your real traffic or that of your “competitors.” This really frustrated me when I was still working as the Web Producer/Editor of a big non-profit’s Web site. One day my boss heard about Alexa and my life became a nightmare.
You could view the data like a poll, and assume that the actual traffic figures scale up in roughly the same proportions, but I never believed it.
On the other hand, your site is often linked as a resource on other blogs, and I caught the reference to you in SnB the other day. I happened to find you when I was looking for knitting information, not for knitting blogs. It’s possible that you get a steadier stream of regular traffic than bloggers who probably only see traffic spikes when they post. Aggregated over time, you might actually be more “popular.”

The ranking tools I’ve seen are pretty defective.
Alexa was bad enough. Then, they instituted a fix, and now it’s WORSE. To talk to the posties (who are also taking ads) I started yet another blog. Read how to juice your Alexa ranking here:
Get your traffic counted.
How do juice your Alexa rank? Scroll down, and see the alexa icon in my footer. Add that to your blog, and Alexa counts ALL your traffic instead of just the traffic from the small fraction of people who add the alexa bar. Since almost no one ads the Alexa icon, because a) it’s work b) it can slow your page load and c) if you don’t want to sell any ads, why would you care? But, if you add it, even a small amount of traffic looks like you get more than WendyKnits or The Yarn Harlot.

Well, I’m at all three sites every day. I can’t remember how I originally found your site, but I’ve been a regular for about a year, I think. Love the haikus! You inspired me to write a birthday haiku for my hubby on my blog… it was … well, less than great, to say the least, but it was fun.

Hey, I told you that your Sockulators were popular! In addition your pictures of horrible knitware has replaced the ever popular but now defunct You Knit What blog. Keep up the great contributions to the knitting world!
Comment by Holly (0 comments.) — 5/3/2007 @ 8:01 am
If 10% clicked it would mean they get around 38,000 daily visitors?
Comment by Toby (1 comments.) — 5/3/2007 @ 1:23 pm
It’s difficult to use the data to estimate how many Wendy gets. She posts regularly, but not every day. Also, people get feeds, so she might get a big rush as soon as she posts. I’m just guessing 10% clicking on that link– after all, it could be higher or lower. (But I don’t click on every link in a blog, so I figure 10%. Who really know!)
I’m still getting loads of hits. There were people up at dawn filling my sitemeter counter with “wendyknits.net” links.I’ll be adding the weekly plot tomorrow so we can see the effect the first full day after she linked.
Comment by lucia — 5/3/2007 @ 1:29 pm
As to the source of your clicks - I found you when I was setting up my Google home pages. You came up when I asked for knitting links.
Comment by Lisa (0 comments.) — 5/4/2007 @ 9:10 am
[…] How much did I pay for the link? Nothing. Was I grateful for the link? Absolutely. The fuller story describing the traffic driving ability of a knitting blog is here: Behold the Power of WendyKnits.Net! […]
