I wrote a sock yardage estimator.
I wrote this because I saw large number of refers with questions like “estimate sock yardage”.
You can enter your sock dimensions, and estimate the total amount of yarn you will need to knit a sock. It’s a fairly crude estimate that assumes a sock is sort of a tube with a short rowed heel turn; I use my “theory of yarn use”, which is working on every sweater since I developed it. So, that should be ok. I entered numbers and compared to a few published sock patterns, and it seems to reproduce estimates for similar sized socks.
You should be able to use it estimate the total amount of yarn for socks knit in stockinette or using an intarsia pattern, like my Argyles. Unfortunately, it won’t estimate the amount of individual colors.
Still, it’s a start. ![]()

You’re welcome.
It’s kind of fun to read the referer logs and figure out what people probably want. I know google sent them here because the page has the word “socks” and “estimate yardage” on it.
I might as well give them “estimate yardage for socks!”

You’re amazing, lucia! Instead of clogging up your comments with tons of text, i’ve posted a question for you regarding socks on my blog. Please visit me and help when you have the time. (I was going to say ‘if you can’ but I know that you can, so that would be silly.)
Thanks!
