One thing about knitters, we are always looking for ways to avoid laborious housework. So, I bet the previous haiku about hand knit carpets left you wondering, “What types of carpets does Lucia have? And how does she keep them clean?”
Well, it turns out, none of the carpets in my home are hand-knit: I have wall to wall carpeting in all of the rooms in my house. Some are light colored and really show dirt and stains. I want to spend time knitting, so I often hire out the carpet cleaning.
Oh, I don’t always hire out. For emergency cleaning (like the time my 80+ mother-in-law spilled red wine on the carpet), I have a home carpet cleaner. It worked nicely because the moment she spilled the wine, Jim cried out “Clear the room!” I dashed down got the carpet cleaner, and got that spot right away.
But even with a carpet cleaner, cleaning all the carpets in the house is pretty heavy work. In fact, even though 4′10″ tall, 80 lb mother-in-law was in awe of this machine. She tried to push it and could not. I’m bigger and stronger and can push it, but I have to admit, I don’t like to move all the furniture or worry about figuring out which products are best at stain cleaning, or eliminating pet orders without damaging the carpet fibers.
Professionals know how to handle these difficult problems. And, let’s face it, I’d rather knit than clean carpets!
Now, naturally, when I hire a carpet cleaning service, I look for someone in the Chicago area. But, I’ve been asked to review the web site of Southern Counties Cleaning, a carpet cleaning service in the UK which services London, Surrey and surrounding counties.
Their site describes a professional service that uses hot water extraction, a very effective method, to clean carpets. They seem set up to handle both commercial and non-commercial clients. Converting their prices into dollars, they look competitively priced (compared to Chicago
).
Oh, and their web page says they also clean rugs, which means if you do knit or buy a hand knit rug, you can avoid cleaning it yourself. So, if you live in the UK (and I know many of my readers do) you may want to contact them to clean your carpets instead of slaving over them yourself! (You’ll find their phone number at the Southern Counties Cleaning web site.)
