My various poncho pages get so many hits, I’ve decided to create another poncho shape. This will be a “two rectangle poncho”, which I will call “Poncho IV”.
It’s one of the easiest shapes to knit. The classic poncho is two rectangles folded and sewn together. The poncho looks sort of like the one picture to the right. The black diagonal line running from the neck to the hem is a seam. The back looks the same as the front.
The person designing a classic two rectangle poncho can decide on the “neck width” the “sleeve length”. Those two parameters then define the shape. After that, you just chart the poncho. It’s pretty easy to do.
Of course, I’m not going to do anything that easy. I’m going to add optional complications for people who like ponchos with relatively tight necks (for a poncho) but don’t want the neck to bunch up. Can you say, knit in shoulder darts? If you knit darts in, the poncho will lay flat across your shoulders. I’m knitting darts into mine because I want to wear it outdoors when watching sporting events in November in Illinois. I don’t want my neck to get cold.
People who want a sexy, light weight, drops off the shoulder poncho will want to skip the shoulder darts.
I’ve got some Christmas green acrylic in my stash. I’ve planned out the program to chart the poncho (but don’t have it coded.) I’m ready to go! I hope to show you the poncho on Monday or Tuesday.

OK–I’m probably having a senior moment here but please explain ‘idiot cord’–or have I just missed the vital info? Just had cataract surgery so anything is possible!

Hi,
When knit by machine, you make Icord by casting on somewhere between 3 and 6 needles. Then, set the machien to knit one directions, and then just knit. You get floats on the back at first. But then the yarn forms a tube. Whe you take it off the machine, you can just pull and get a tube.
I’m going to show more this afternoon. (Chicago time. )
