Pussy cat sweater

Designer A, “Look what I came up with!”

Designer B, “Who doesn’t want a big fat cat sitting on her chest?”

This appeared in McCall’s Needlework and Craft, October 1988. It appeared on a page that proclaimed “A Night On the Town!” I guess the editor lopped off “Listening to Your Six Year Old’s School Play!”

  1. Wow. That’s incredible! I really don’t believe you when you say people used to wear sweaters like that. Or should I say, I can’t believe you, it would kill my will to knit.

  2. The ‘eighties were . . . different. Some people really did knit sweaters with huge pictures on them, but the only ones I’ve seen lately were knit for children. I had one once with a pink butterfly on taupe. I wore it. In public. Having no taste, I should be grateful that I out-fatted it or I would be wearing it still.

  3. Oh yes. I was a little tyke in the 80s but yes, massive sweaters with huge pictures were indeed very fashionable. They were worn with tight jeans or leggings. Sometimes two different pairs of slouch socks (you scrunched one pair below the other so you had two colors of socks on your ankles). Oh, and the headband thing was definitely also a “thing”.

    Believe it. It was SCARY.

  4. don’t forget the different-colored reeboks. I’d have a yellow and a pink shoe to go with my yellow and pink socks. UGH.

  7. Careful there, folks. Remember how we all said “The 60’s were a fashion nightmare. They’ll NEVER try that again,” and “The 70’s were a fashion nightmare. Nobody’ll EVER buy that again.” Well, I’m already seeing big-sweater-skinny-leggings combinations. Yikes. I can’t WAIT for big hair and headbands to come back … not. [shudder] Good thing I prefer Style to Fashion. [waves her Chance wristies in the air, smoothes her Chico's skirt] :-D
