Designer A, “What’s a Pearly King?” Designer B? “A what? “
Designer A, “Desperate Yarn company wants us to design a ‘Pearly King Costume’ for a doll.” Designer B, “Oh.”
Designer A pulls “Costumes of the World” off the shelf. ” A Pearly King is a ‘costermonger’. . . [blah, blah, blah ] . . . , a street vendor who sells fruits and vegetables from a barrow.” Designer B raises eyebrow.
Designer A, “. . . Their ornate costumes of black velvet are entirely covered with pearl buttons.”
Designer B, “Well, there you go!”

Pearly Kings and Queens is a London, cockney thing - I’m not quite sure of the tradition behind it. The song that comes to mind is “Doing the Lambeth Walk” - see http://www.historic-uk.com/CultureUK/PearlyKingsQueens.htm and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pearly_Queen

Do you know to whom they are refering when they ask for a Pearly or Pearlie?
When I was much younger, there were individuals in a part of London who wore many pearl buttons on their clothing. I wonder if they still exist.
