I’m a lucky gal;
I don’t have to knit this thing.
It makes my brain hurt!
Designer A, “Vogue Knitting wants us to design something using Koigu.” Designer B, “How about socks?”
A, “No, they want something big and impressive that uses 36 skeins of Koigu PPPM! “, B, “How about a really big shawl?”
A, “Something never done before!”
Designer B dashes to the table, grabs a bunch of crayons, creates a sketch, and shows it to designer A. A exclaims, “Hey! That’s really something!”
You may wonder: But why does it make your brain hurt? The pattern includes two somewhat frightening instructions:
- “Place knit hexagons on the papter in the manner they are on the graph. (This would be less scary if I could find the graph.)
- “On another piece of paper, cut out the negative spaces between hexagons. Knit these shapes in garter stitch in color #4000 by increasing or decreasing, as the case may be, to match the shapes you are knitting.” (Translation: The instructions for knitting the black filled in bits are impossible to write; figure out how to knit the black part and finish the darn sweater coat on your own! )

That’s priceless. I often wonder where you find some of these things!

This one happened to be in a recent issue of Vogue knitting, I think!
36 skeins of Koigu at $12 a skein: $432
4,569 (wo)man hours to knit the motifs: $[whatever you make in an hour]
Realizing that no one, not even the designer, knows how to knit the stupid thing: Priceless

Absolutely priceless!
Now, honestly, if you didn’t read ahead, and made the mistake of starting this thing, wouldn’t you break down crochet the black “filler” bits? I mean… would you seriously even try to make garter stitch “filler bits” to sew to the hexagons?!

If I started that without reading the directions, I would NOT crochet the filler bits. I think I would have a lot of knittted placemats and coasters. How can they charge (even subscribers pay, of course) for a pattern like that??

[…] Designer A, “Well, I’d really like to come up with something like that, but bend it a little…. Why don’t I knit a whole bunch of hexagons using short rows, and sew them up together!” Designer B, “I feel the groove!” This appeared in Vogue Knitting, Fall 2005; just imagine wearing it with the Kalaidescope Sweater Coat!
