Search Terms

At the beginning of each month, I like to look at my server statistics and read the search phrases people use to find my site. Skipping all having to do with exercise and some others, here are phrases that bring people to my site:

  • “ponchos”; 266 searches. No surprise there; I have quite a few generators to create poncho patterns! People also looked for “poncho patterns” “knit poncho patterns” all sorts of phrases containing “poncho”. This includes “granny square poncho” and “doll poncho pattern”; both very specific!
  • “graft paper”; 172 searches. I have free knitters graph paper. The interesting thing is, “graft” beats out “graph”. I’ve looked my site over, and I have yet to find where I misspelled “graph”. Maybe I should mis-spell it. I’d get more traffic!
  • “knitted slippers”; 69 searches I have several free patterns for slippers. I assume they found what they wanted.
  • “dog sweater patterns” ; “dog sweater pattern” and “free knitted dog sweater patterns” combined to give 139 searches arriving at my site. (There are even more combinations involving dog, sweater, pattern, knit and free. I’m not going to add them all up.)
  • “provisional cast on” had 39 searches. I have described my “cheater’s provisional cast on” when knitting my capelet and my sideways vest; I hope the visitors found the one they are looking for.
  • Lots of people were looking for hats. The search terms are filled with “free hat patterns”, “ear flap hat pattern”, and a large variety of other searches involving “hat”. I’m not even going to count. (People were also looking for mittens. Searches on two needle mittens are popular. I suspected that would happen. I wrote my pattern specifically because people on the knit list complained there were none available for free on the web.)
  • Lots of combinations of “capelet”. I created that pattern because a visitor emailed and requested it. Some people do want to knit these.
  • I’m glad to see some “knitting pattern generator” searches; (17 to be exact). It shows some people know what pattern generators are! In fact, four searches were for “lucia s hat generator”. Think they were looking for this site? :)
  • “earthlink-peoplepc-wssynd” (12). I couldn’t prevent myself from googling on that. Evidently, lots of people see that in their search terms — and are mystified. Evidently, some search engine leaves mystery search terms.
  • “how to make a felted wine bottle cover”. Five people want this!
  • “free knitted toboggan pattern” appeared in February. Someone wants to knit a toboggan?

Unfortunately, my January server logs don’t list search phrases that brought fewer than 3 people to my site. Darn! Based on that request for a toboggan pattern, I bet those would be pretty funny.

Feading the hits I did get, I’ve decided I need to knit a wine bottle cover to give the people looking for those something to knit. I’m sure I can find a wine bottle to model it for me. Should it be hand knit or machine knit?

I’m not going to knit a toboggan felted or otherwise.

  2. Oh– you’ve GOT to look. I also have site meter installed, and look at the terms people search on there. It can be hilareous!
