I found this in the Holiday 1991 issue of Cast On.
I have a whole bunch of issues of “Cast On” fron the 90’s. That was a great magazine! Detailed technical articles; wearable knits, and the occasional intentionally funny item.
Is “Cast On” still any good? I honestly don’t know; I haven’t seen any recent issues. You can click Cast On

Those are amazing…. Amazingly ridiculous. I would make oven mitts like this but mittens?
