I think it looks like a lotus or some sort of floating pond lily. I imagine it in some color other than grey and floating on a blue or blue green background. And of course, either smaller, if plopped on clothing, or knit into an afghan or wall hanging so we could see the detail without all that weird folding and crumpling. I agree. Look at some of his designs...it's not about bright, but about blending color that he's famous for! I recognize the flower design, as well.
