The toe has lengthened into nearly a whole foot including a gusset. I took photos to illustrate how I increased stitches; I’ll be posting those details as soon as I’m certain I don’t need to rip back the flap due to poor programming.
Yes, as you’ve probably guessed that, if I knit the gusset, then I’ve written at least parts of the sockulator. Indeed I did. The first draft of the “calculating core” is done, but it’s far from finished. I need to make the whole pull-down menu entry part so it runs at the web. Oh, and of course, I need to knit my sock.
I’m also thinking a bit about how to best shape the leg and, in principle, that might change the leg calculation. I don’t know about your calves, but it turns out my calf bulge is larger in circumference than my knee. Is this common? (Does this matter? Do I need to make the leg get wider, then narrower? Oh… probably not. I’ve never seen a pattern get that anal about shaping the leg; if there’s shaping, it just shapes smoothly all the way up. The test knitting will almost certainly the simplest way of thinking about shaping the leg is good enough.)
As to test knitting itself, that’s going quickly because I’m using yarn that knits at 4.75 st/inch. I know loads of people like thin socks, but I’m a clogs Birkenstock kinda gal, and I love think ones. So, these feel great to me!
I have to go turn the heel, knit the flap, stop to take photos, watch TV, drink hot chocolate and pet the cats — all at once! Who knows, maybe as I knit this sock a fib or haiku will pop into my head?

I can’t wait to use this sockulator! I’m totally a Birks gal too… only I haven’t owned any since moving to LA. They look at you kinda funny when you wear them with your crazy socks. (God, I can’t wait to get out of here!!!)
