The Knitting Fiend

I was just going through boxes and found an ancient UFO. It is 20 years old. Yes, 20 years old. Worse yet, the only thing unfinished is binding off the last few stitches on the neck band! Wow!

Ok.. here is the story.. I started the sweater while in grad school. I bought yarn from Elizabeth Zimmernan– yummy Icelandic yarn. I calculated the shape using her formulas in “Knitting Without Tears” , and cast on! Then.. I got caught up in that whole, “finish the thesis” thing, got a job and moved. The sweater went into a box.

It has now emerged from the box. Fortunately, I also found a scrap of yarn to bind off. So, tomorrow I’ll bind off.

Added later– I wore this when I took my Mom to the hospital on Tuesday. She laughed when I told her how long it took me to finish!

I created the sweater pattern using my generator. (See the links to the right.)
I’ve finished the front and back and assembled the shoulders.

I knit the neck band in ribbing and mitered the center. I took the ribbing off on waste yarn, and back stitched through the open loops to attach it to the neck.  I always read the waste yarn should be removed as you back stitch, but I found it easier to leave it on, and remove it at the very end.

Backstitching through the tiny loops was a pain in the neck, but it looks great.

Now, I need to knit the sleeves.

How is everyone doing on their V neck?

Jim has been wearing his regularly. It’s gone to Washington DC, Oklahoma, Seattle and Alaska since I finished it.

I’m making one for David for the knitalong. So far, I’ve made the swatch, knit the front and back and made the neck. Then I got sidetracked gardening and ….well.. looking into selecting software to start a blog.

I’ll put up pictures of David’s sweater fragments soon. (Yeah.. I keep saying that.)
